1. Program Associate

JOB TITLE:  Program Associate
REPORTS TO:  Program Director
TIME COMMITMENT:  Part-time: 15-29 hours/week (or Full-time)
STARTING SALARY:  $13/hour (Full time salary negotiable; commensurate with education and experience, with a competitive benefit package)

GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION:

 

The Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) is a dynamic, forward-looking, and growing non-profit organization. We seek well-qualified, highly motivated, committed, and solutions-oriented candidates to fill in the full-time position with the Employment and Microenterprise Development Program (EMED). This position will directly support an effective implementation of the program and delivery of direct services to the community members served. Functions: Coordination, planning and organizing job fairs (10%); Individualized job application assistance and case management (30%); Documentation (10%); Working with and supporting start-up businesses (40%); and all others (10%).

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

  • Engages partners, clients and establishes trusting, collaborative relationships directed toward the goal of competitive and sustained employment in community settings.
  • Coordinates and organizes job fairs in partnerships with employers and other service providers.
  • Provides direct individualized employment services to community members.
  • Assists in organizing trainings and classes for a Small Business plan, covering areas such as profit & loss, feasibility studies, cash flow, and marketing.
  • Assists participating clients in creating and following an achievable plan for sustainable business growth.
  • Leverages internal and external resources by recruiting volunteers and professional organizations to assist participants in reaching stated business development goals.
  • Assists participants in establishing relationships in the local business community, the general community, and churches.
  • Explores the opportunities for the establishment of collaborative partnerships with various service providers locally and nationally.
  • Assists individual clients with finding competitive and sustained employment.
  • Provides individualized follow-along supports to assist clients in maintaining employment. Provides frequent in-person supports during the first month of a new job and at least monthly after working steadily if desired by clients.
  • Assists individual clients in learning how their benefits will be affected by earned income. For example, refers clients for benefits planning to learn about work incentives offered by the Social Security Administration. After employment is achieved, assists with an individualized plan for reporting earnings to the Social Security Administration or other sources of benefits.
  • Helps clients think about long-term employment goals, work history, strengths, personal culture (as defined by each person), justice involvement, and other factors that relate to a current vocational goal. Completes career profile for each new client with information from the client and other sources. Updates the profile with each new job and educational experience.
  • Holds regular case management sessions with each participant to determine his/her needs relative to his/her employment or business goals.
  • Supports and provides technical assistance, determining a viable business interest, a small business plan, technicalities for registration, the process of obtaining a micro loan for a start-up business, etc.
  • Documents program activities i.e. event log, case files in a timely manner.
  • Accepts tasks and projects as assigned.
  • Attends staff and partners meetings.
  • Participates in program evaluation.

  • Cooperative, friendly, and helpful attitude with clients and co-workers. Ability to work closely with other employees to ensure positive, constructive environment within the Employment and Microenterprise Development team and throughout the Institute.
  • Demonstrate high level of professionalism and personal integrity.
  • Flexibility and availability, including willingness to travel and work some weekends.
  • International experience – high degree of cultural sensitivity and competence.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and growth-oriented environment, while maintaining a sense of humor and a positive, solution-oriented approach.

OTHER SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

The successful candidate must be computer literate, with proficiency in MS Office (Excel and Word) and Internet applications.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required for full-time position. College senior candidates will be considered with demonstrated commitment to transferring full time position once graduated.

2. Lead Instructor
Hours: 20-29 hours/week (M, T, W, TH, F: 11:00am-6:00pm)
Duration: Eight weeks; June 1, 2016 – August 1, 2016
Pay: Competitive; commensurate with education and experience
Project Primary Site: University of Indianapolis

The Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) seeks a highly-motivated, energetic, and talented individual to lead a unique academic training program for high school students from Burma. The program will utilize participatory action research, engaging students in group research projects exploring issues of social justice in their community. Students will gain familiarity with research methodology, while improving their academic English skills and developing other skills necessary to succeed in higher education.

Qualifications
•    Bachelor’s degree – advanced or terminal degree preferred
•    Strong familiarity with research methodology and/or experience
•    Commitment to participatory action research as a method of engaging and empowering youth to create positive social change
•    Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
•    Able to work in a fast-paced environment/Meet deadlines
•    Proficiency in Microsoft Office and internet applications
•    Demonstrate high level of professionalism, respect, and personal integrity
•    Be a team player; able to collaborate with others
•    International experience – high degree of cultural sensitivity and competence
•    Enthusiasm for BACI’s mission and strong commitment to helping disadvantaged students achieve academic success and college readiness
•    Flexibility and availability/willingness to work some weekends

Responsibilities
•    Complete staff training (will take place during the first week of the program)
•    Successfully implement the program curriculum, leading the research process from beginning to end
•    Introduce and explain key concepts in research methodology, making sure students fully grasp each step and why it matters
•    Oversee multiple groups of students as they engage in research projects, helping each group overcome challenges as they arise, and ensuring the active participation of all group members in the research process
•    Attend staff meeting
•    Closely work with Program Assistants and Interns
•    Fully document daily reflections, observations, and program activities
•    Prepare bi-weekly reports to Executive Director
•    Participant in program evaluation

3. Group Research Leader

•    Strong familiarity with research methodology and/or experience

•    Proficiency in Microsoft Office and internet applications

At BACI, we maintain a high standard of accountability and transparency with the use of grants and gifts our donors entrust to us. We are always trying to keep our overhead rate low. In the past year, we used 95 percent of our total operating expenses towards programs that directly benefit students and community.
