1. Program Associate

JOB TITLE:  Program Associate
REPORTS TO:  Program Director
TIME COMMITMENT:  Part-time: 15-29 hours/week (or Full-time)
STARTING SALARY:  $13/hour (Full time salary negotiable; commensurate with education and experience, with a competitive benefit package)

GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) is a dynamic, forward-looking, and growing non-profit organization. We seek well-qualified, highly motivated, committed, and solutions-oriented candidates to fill in the full-time position with the Employment and Microenterprise Development Program (EMED). This position will directly support an effective implementation of the program and delivery of direct services to the community members served. Functions: Coordination, planning and organizing job fairs (10%); Individualized job application assistance and case management (30%); Documentation (10%); Working with and supporting start-up businesses (40%); and all others (10%).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

  • Engages partners, clients and establishes trusting, collaborative relationships directed toward the goal of competitive and sustained employment in community settings.
  • Coordinates and organizes job fairs in partnerships with employers and other service providers.
  • Provides direct individualized employment services to community members.
  • Assists in organizing trainings and classes for a Small Business plan, covering areas such as profit & loss, feasibility studies, cash flow, and marketing.
  • Assists participating clients in creating and following an achievable plan for sustainable business growth.
  • Leverages internal and external resources by recruiting volunteers and professional organizations to assist participants in reaching stated business development goals.
  • Assists participants in establishing relationships in the local business community, the general community, and churches.
  • Explores the opportunities for the establishment of collaborative partnerships with various service providers locally and nationally.
  • Assists individual clients with finding competitive and sustained employment.
  • Provides individualized follow-along supports to assist clients in maintaining employment. Provides frequent in-person supports during the first month of a new job and at least monthly after working steadily if desired by clients.
  • Assists individual clients in learning how their benefits will be affected by earned income. For example, refers clients for benefits planning to learn about work incentives offered by the Social Security Administration. After employment is achieved, assists with an individualized plan for reporting earnings to the Social Security Administration or other sources of benefits.
  • Helps clients think about long-term employment goals, work history, strengths, personal culture (as defined by each person), justice involvement, and other factors that relate to a current vocational goal. Completes career profile for each new client with information from the client and other sources. Updates the profile with each new job and educational experience.
  • Holds regular case management sessions with each participant to determine his/her needs relative to his/her employment or business goals.
  • Supports and provides technical assistance, determining a viable business interest, a small business plan, technicalities for registration, the process of obtaining a micro loan for a start-up business, etc.
  • Documents program activities i.e. event log, case files in a timely manner.
  • Accepts tasks and projects as assigned.
  • Attends staff and partners meetings.
  • Participates in program evaluation.

The Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) seeks a highly-motivated, energetic, and talented individual to lead a unique academic training program for high school students from Burma. The program will utilize participatory action research, engaging students in group research projects exploring issues of social justice in their community. Students will gain familiarity with research methodology, while improving their academic English skills and developing other skills necessary to succeed in higher education.

Qualifications
•    Bachelor’s degree – advanced or terminal degree preferred
•    Strong familiarity with research methodology and/or experience
•    Commitment to participatory action research as a method of engaging and empowering youth to create positive social change
•    Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
•    Able to work in a fast-paced environment/Meet deadlines

•    Introduce and explain key concepts in research methodology, making sure students fully grasp each step and why it matters
•    Oversee multiple groups of students as they engage in research projects, helping each group overcome challenges as they arise, and ensuring the active participation of all group members in the research process
•    Attend staff meeting
•    Closely work with Program Assistants and Interns
•    Fully document daily reflections, observations, and program activities
•    Prepare bi-weekly reports to Executive Director
•    Participant in program evaluation

JOB TITLE:  Program Coordinator/Upward College Program
REPORTS TO:  Program Director
EMPLOYMENT STATUS:  Non-exempt
TIME COMMITMENT:  Part-time, 15-29 hours/week

GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) is a dynamic, forward-looking, and growing organization. We seek well-qualified, highly motivated, creative, and solutions-oriented candidates to fill in the part-time position with the Upward College Program (UCP).

Upward College Program assists the Burmese high school students with academic skills, college and career preparation, and youth violence prevention. Tutoring, life skills and leadership training, character education, conflict resolution training, mentorship, a rigorous summer research course, a soccer club, and extracurricular opportunities are available to UCP participants. UCP aims to help participants improve their performance in class, which increases the high school graduation rate and the college-attendance rate of the students in Central Indiana.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

  • Coordinate the program implementation by working collaboratively with partners, managing resources, and conducting effective program management;
  • Coordinate outreach, education, and media activities; make presentations on Upward College Program and college options in the United States;
  • Conduct volunteer recruitment and orientation, participate and assist in instructor and volunteer trainings;
  • Provide tutoring and instruction services for High School Juniors or Seniors from Burma at BACI Upward College Program in Math, Science & English courses;
  • Coordinate with college admissions offices to help with classroom/college visit activities;
  • Provide supervision to other volunteers, such as part-time tutors and college coaches;
  • Look for resources to make sure all volunteers get the support they need to implement tasks – books, resources, training;
  • Provide near-peer mentoring to approximately 3-5 juniors or seniors, with topics including ACT & SAT preparation, the college, financial aid, and scholarship application processes, and college transition guidance, including assisting with college and scholarship essays;
  • Ensure all necessary program information management system is enforced and implemented, including documenting all contacts and services in student case files and maintaining case note logs. In addition to documenting all services, record student’s educational progress in case files, including English competency, academic concerns, whether or not the student participated in any college visits, SAT/ACT test scores, college, financial aid, & scholarship application, and their status in the process;
  • Be thoroughly familiar with the policies and procedures guiding the work of this position in particular and the work of the program. Perform job functions in line with these policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:                      

  • Has proven knowledge of the higher education system in the US and familiarity with colleges and universities in Indiana and the US.
  • Ideally has received graduate level education or is a recent graduate.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Must be comfortable tutoring Math, Science, and English courses.
  • Is patient, enthusiastic, self-controlled, and dependable.
  • Has the ability to work well with others and follow directions.
  • Previous work experience and interest in teaching, tutoring, youth development, human rights, or other direct social services preferred. Cultural sensitivity is essential.
  • Understands the program development, implementation and evaluations.

GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) is a dynamic, forward-looking, and growing non-profit organization. We seek well-qualified, highly motivated, creative, and solutions-oriented candidates to fill in the part-time position with the Employment and Microenterprise Development Program (EMED). This Specialist will establish a strategy to meet the goal of assisting at least 4 individuals establish his/her own business per year over a 3-year period. In the past year, we used 95 percent of our total operating expenses towards programs that directly benefit students and community.
