Current Open Position(s):

I. Upward College Summer Program – Lead Instructor

Job Title: Lead Instructor
Hours: 20-29 hours/week (M, T, W, TH, F: 11:00am-5:00pm)
Duration: June 1, 2015 – August 1, 2015
Pay: Competitive; commensurate with education and experience
Primary Project Site: University of Indianapolis

The Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) seeks a highly-motivated, energetic, and talented individual to lead a unique academic training program for Indianapolis-area high school students from Burma. The program will utilize participatory action research, engaging students in group research projects exploring issues of social justice in their community. Students will gain familiarity with research methodology, while improving their academic English skills and developing other skills necessary to succeed in higher education.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, graduate student – advanced or terminal degree preferred
  • Strong familiarity with research methodology and/or experience
  • Commitment to participatory action research as a method of engaging and empowering youth to create positive social change
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment/Meet deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Internet applications
  • Demonstrate high level of professionalism, respect, and personal integrity
  • Be a team player; able to collaborate with others
  • International experience preferred – high degree of cultural sensitivity and competence
  • Enthusiasm for BACI’s mission and strong commitment to helping disadvantaged students achieve academic success and college readiness
  • Flexibility and availability/willingness to work some weekends

Responsibilities

  • Complete staff training (will take place during the first week of the program)
  • Successfully implement the program curriculum, leading the research process from beginning to end
  • Introduce and explain key concepts in research methodology, making sure students fully grasp each step and why it matters
  • Oversee multiple groups of students as they engage in research projects, helping each group overcome challenges as they arise, and ensuring the active participation of all group members in the research process
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Closely work with Program Assistants and Interns
  • Fully document daily reflections, observations, and program activities
  • Prepare bi-weekly reports to Executive Director
  • Participate in program evaluation

II. Upward College Summer Program – Group Research Leader

Hours: 20-29 hours/week (M, T, W, TH, F: 11:00am-5:00pm)
Duration: June 1, 2015-August 1, 2015
Type: Internship or Volunteer Position
Primary Project Site: University of Indianapolis

The Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) seeks a highly-motivated, energetic, and committed individual to join our summer team to implement a unique academic training program for Indianapolis-area high school students from Burma. The program will utilize participatory action research, engaging students in group research projects that explore issues of social justice in their community. Students will gain familiarity with research methodology, while improving their academic English skills and developing other skills necessary to succeed in higher education.

Qualifications

  • College junior/senior year, recent graduate, or Graduate student
  • Strong familiarity with research methodology and/or experience
  • Commitment to participatory action research as a method of engaging and empowering youth to create positive social change
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment/meet deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Internet applications
  • Demonstrate high level of professionalism, respect, and personal integrity
  • Able to collaborate with others; a team player with positive attitude
  • Enthusiasm for BACI’s mission and strong commitment to helping disadvantaged students achieve academic and future success
  • International experience preferred – high degree of cultural sensitivity and competence

At BACI, we maintain a high standard of accountability and transparency with the use of grants and gifts our donors entrust to us. We are always trying to keep our overhead rate low. In the past year, we used 95 percent of our total operating expenses towards programs that directly benefit students and community.
